What is fuel polishing?
Fuel polishing and cleaning is a preventative maintenance process used to remove contaminants from stored diesel or fuel systems to keep engines running efficiently and reliably. Over time, fuel can degrade and become contaminated with water, sediment, sludge, rust particles, and microbial growth such as bacteria and algae.
These contaminants often settle at the bottom of storage tanks and can clog filters, damage injectors, reduce combustion efficiency, and even cause engine failure. Fuel polishing works by circulating the fuel through a series of specialized filtration and water-separation systems that remove solids, break down sludge, and eliminate excess moisture. The cleaned fuel is then returned to the tank, restoring it to near-original quality.
This process is commonly used for backup generators, marine vessels, heavy equipment, and long-term fuel storage systems. Regular fuel polishing extends engine life, improves performance, reduces maintenance costs, and ensures reliable operation during emergencies or peak demand situations.
